How Do I Ask Every Customer for a Google Review Without Being Awkward?
Last updated: November 3, 2026
Make it part of how you finish every job, so it's routine instead of a favour. Ask every customer the same way, right when the work is done, and hand them a link or QR code so it takes a minute. Google says you can ask customers to visit a link or scan a QR code, but you can't offer anything in return or only ask the happy ones (Google Business Profile Help, Google Maps content policy).
Book a CallWhy it feels awkward
It feels awkward when you only ask some people, or you ask like you're begging. The reason why it stops being awkward is when it's just part of the process. For example, the same way you hand over the invoice, you ask for the review.
A simple way to ask
Right after the job, in person or at handoff:
"Thanks for having us. We ask every customer for an honest Google review. It helps other homeowners find us. Here's the link."
Then give them the link or the QR code. Google lets you create a link or QR code for reviews from your Business Profile (Google Business Profile Help).
What Google doesn't allow
From Google's own rules (Google Business Profile Help, Google Maps content policy):
- No incentives. No discounts, free services or payment for a review, or for changing or removing a bad one.
- No picking. You can't only ask the customers you think are happy, and you can't discourage bad reviews.
- No pressure. Don't push people to write it while you're standing there, and don't tell them what to say.
That's why we always say every customer. It's what Google allows, and honestly mixed reviews look more real. Google says a mix of positive and negative feedback often feels more trustworthy (Google Business Profile Help).
Make it a habit, not a campaign
Decide who asks, the tech or the office, and when. Then do it on every job. Reply to the reviews you get, good and bad. Reviews are one of the things we build on in our local SEO work, and if you want to know whether that work is paying off, see how to know if local SEO is worth it.

FAQ
How do I ask a customer for a Google review?
Ask every customer the same way right after the job, and give them a link or QR code so it takes a minute.
Can I give a discount for a Google review?
No. Google says offering incentives like discounts or free services for a review is prohibited.
Can I only ask happy customers?
No. Google doesn't allow businesses to selectively ask for positive reviews or discourage negative ones. Ask every customer.
Do customers need a Google account to leave a review?
Yes. Google says they need to be signed in, and they can create an account with a non-Gmail email address.
How do I reply to a bad Google review?
Stay calm and short, keep private details out, explain what you can and can't do, and offer to sort it out by phone.
How do I make a Google review link or QR code?
You can create both from your Business Profile, then print the QR code on a card or invoice.
Should my techs ask for the review or the office?
Whoever finishes the job with the customer. The tech usually gets the warmest moment, so train them on one simple line.
