Can a Service Area Business Rank in the Map Pack Without Showing an Address?
Last updated: November 2, 2026
Yes. Google says if you don't serve customers at your address, you should remove it from your Business Profile and set a service area instead (Google Business Profile Help). Hiding the address is following the rules, not a penalty. Where you show up still comes down to relevance, distance and prominence (Google Business Profile Help).
Book a CallWhat Google actually says
A service area business visits customers, like a plumber or a cleaner, and doesn't serve them at its own address. Google's guidelines say a plumber running the business from home should clear the address from the profile (Google Business Profile Help). Google also says a service area helps people find your profile (Google Business Profile Help).
How to set your service area
Google's rules (Google Business Profile Help):
- You can list up to 20 service areas by city, postal code or other area.
- You can't set a radius around your business anymore.
- Your whole area shouldn't be more than about 2 hours of driving from where you're based.
- Be as specific and accurate as you can.
For example, an electrician based in Brampton might list Brampton, Mississauga, Caledon and Vaughan, not all of Ontario.
Don't fake an address
Google says a rented mailing address you don't work out of, a virtual office, isn't eligible for a profile (Google Business Profile Help). Faking one puts the whole profile at risk. It's not worth it.
What still moves you on the map
Google ranks local results mainly on relevance, distance and prominence (Google Business Profile Help). You control the first and third. Fill out your profile completely, pick the right category, add real photos, reply to reviews and ask every customer for one. That's the core of our local SEO work.
